Stevensville Lakeshore –SMAC
Tournament
October 11, 2007
For the final game of the SMAC Tournament
Stevensville Lakeshore traveled to Portage Central to face the Portage
Central Mustangs. The Mustangs came out strong with many shots on goal, in
the first half of the game, but it was not until the 25th minute
that PC finally scored. In a great defensive play by Evan Quinones, who
moved the ball up the field to Donny Peel, who sent it to Michael Hull for
the first goal. In the second half, our offense was bombarding the goalie
with shots, it was Kevin Ledden that finally sent it into the net. With two
minutes remaining in the game, Cameron Restivo, tapped the ball to Manuel
Valle for an easy goal from in front of the net. In a very offensive game
for the Mustangs, with 25 shots on goal to Stevensville’s 2 shots on goal.
The Mustangs had many close shots with their continued pressure on the
Lakeshore goal which sent the PC fans to their feet in hopes of another
goal.

Final Score: Portage Central -3 and
Stevensville Lakeshore – 0
Portage Northern – SMAC Tournament
October 9, 2007
The JV Portage Central Mustangs faced
cross-town rivals the Portage Northern Huskies at the PN field. The last
time these two teams faced each other the Mustangs won 2-0. The game proved
to be a very physical one, with both teams battling to be the first to
score. It was not until the 31st minute that Michael Hull set one
in from the left side to Cameron Restivo to tap one in from in front of the
goal. The remainder of the game was one of ball control and excellent
defensive play. Keenan Cronyn and Andrew Galer each had a great game in
goal. The efforts of defenders, Carson Carpenter, Dan Mucha, and Brad
Elliston help prevent some scoring opportunities by the PN Huskies.

Final Score: Portage
Central -1 and Portage Northern – 0
Forest Hills Eastern
October 6, 2007
Forest Hills came south to visit the PC
Mustangs on an unseasonable fall day, with temperatures in the high 80’s and
a lot of humidity, the day made for a summer-like game. The teams were
equally challenged and the first goal finally came in the 28th
minute with a corner kick to Kevin Ledden who sent it to Zak Yamami for an
easy Mustang goal. Unfortunately a few minutes later Forest Hills sent one
in the net as well. The second half was a battle of defense without a goal
being scored by either team.
Final Score: Portage
Central -1 and Forest Hills Eastern - 1
Mattawan – SMAC Tournament
October 4, 2007
The Mattawan Wildcats came to PC to try to
even the score as they came to face our Portage Central Mustangs, the
Wildcats taking a 3-0 loss the last time we faced each other, the Wildcats
came out strong. It was not until the 28th minute that Zak Yamani
sent one from the right side to Joe Higashi for a nice score from in front
of the net. Four minutes later Dan Mucha drove one up the field for a nice
play to Michael Hull for our second score. Goalie Andrew Galer managed a
shut out in the first half. It was not until the second half that we scored
again in the 63rd minute with our new secret weapon, Michael
Hull, who blended his defensive skills and his offensive skills to drive the
ball through the Mattawan defenders and to the goal for his second goal of
the evening. Keenan Cronyn almost had a shut out in the second half;
however the Wildcats managed to sneak one in during the last 20 seconds of
play.

Final Score: Portage
Central -3 and Mattawan -1
St. Joseph
October 2, 2007
The Portage Central Mustangs marched west to
face the St Joseph Bears. It was another beautiful day for soccer a bit
cloudy but the temps were in the mid 70’s. In the opening kick off, Michael
Hull rushed the goal, but was denied, this was just a warm-up for things to
come, in the 8th minute Michael Hull again charged the net and
laid in a beauty! 12 minutes later, Joe Higashi tapped one to Hull and he
was able to pass the defense for another perfect goal. Later, in the 31st
minute Zak Yamani set up Mike Smodic for the teams 3rd goal. The
second half was a battle of defense with both teams having only three shots
on goal. The Mustangs were able to count on the strong defensive effort by
Dan Mucha, Brad Elliston and Evan Quinones. Unfortunately in the 68th
minute, the Bears managed to sneak a goal, ending Andrew Galer’s chance for
another shutout.

Final Score: Portage Central - 3 and St Joseph – 1
Grand Rapids Christian
September 29, 2007
The Portage Central Mustangs traveled to the
beautiful new Eagle Stadium at Grand Rapids Christian. The new turf provided
a fast paced game and the Mustangs quickly adapted to the turf. Our Mustangs
scored in the 24th minute when the Eagles fouled Carson Carpenter
which set up a foul kick and after a couple shots on goal, Manuel Valle
nicely placed one in the net. The remainder of the game was a defensive
battle between the teams.

Final Score: Portage
Central - 1 and Grand Rapids Christian - 0
Ann Arbor
September 27, 2007
The Ann Arbor Pioneers traveled west to face
our JV PC Mustangs in a non-conference match on a cloudy and breezy
September evening. The Pioneers struck first with a goal early in the first
half. It was not until there were 5 minutes remaining in the second half
that the Mustangs hit their first goal. Hunter Tolley took an outside shot
from the left side after the ball had rebounded from several shots on goal.
Our second goal came just a minute later as Joe Higashi sent one to Michael
Hull as Michael was able to drive it in for as sweet goal. Everyone
was glad to see the return of Kyle Stewart to the bench, though he came in
on crutches, we all wish Kyle a speedy recovery.
Final Score: Portage
Central - 2 and Ann Arbor – 1
Sturgis
September 25, 2007
The Sturgis Trojans traveled north to face
our Portage Central Mustang JV team. The day was muggy and windy, with
storms coming in from the south west. As usual for this team, PC kept the
ball on the Sturgis side of the field. The Mustangs had 12 shots on goal and
it was not until the 25th minute that Donny Peel sent one from
the center to the left side for Mike Smodic to nicely place our first goal
in the upper ninety. Seven minutes later Peel tapped the ball to Michael
Hull, who drove it to the net for a great score. Hull did a great job moving
from his usual defensive position to the offensive game. Kevin Ledden proved
to be a great defensive player as he dropped back to fill Hull's shoes. The
second half only lasted 2 minutes as the sound of thunder threatened the
game.

Final Score: Portage Central -2 and Sturgis - 0
Kalamazoo Central
September 18, 2007
The Portage Central JV Mustangs faced the
Kalamazoo Central Giants at the Portage Central fields on another beautiful
night of soccer. With many of our players out due to injuries the rest of
the team stepped up to meet the challenge, playing longer on the field and
sometimes filling in positions left open by injured players. In the third
minute of the game Donny Peel crossed the ball over to Evan Carpenter for
our first score. Our next score did not come again until the 3 minute of the
second half when Donny Peel again crossed the ball to Cameron Restivo for
the Mustang’s second goal. Our third goal came with 9 minutes left as
Cameron sent a ball to Zak Yamani. The game was dominated by PC, our
defense, led by the experience of Dan Mucha, kept the ball away from our end
of the field preventing Kalamazoo Central from having any shots on goal. Our
offense kept the KC goalie busy by delivering 29 shots on goal.
We pray for the speedy recovery of our many injured players, you are greatly
missed.
The JV team congratulates the Seniors and their parents as they celebrated
senior night between games. Good Luck Ben, Bryce, Trevor, Nick, James, and
Aaron.
Final Score: Portage Central -3 and
Kalamazoo Central - 0
West Ottawa
September 15, 2007
The Portage Central JV Mustangs welcomed the
West Ottawa team to Portage on a beautiful Saturday, with the sun shining
and the temperature near 57 F, occasional clouds brought a chill to the
fans. West Ottawa started the game strong with a goal in the 7th
minute. Our Mustangs then played a very defensive game and stopped West
Ottawa from scoring. West Ottawa pressured us with 9 shots on goal to our 2
shot in the first half. The second half began and it was a new game. The
Mustangs came out stronger and West Ottawa found themselves playing more
defense. The Mustangs picked up their offense and had 6 shots on goal to
only 3 shots on goal by the West Ottawa team. WO responded by playing a very
physical game, 2 of their players drew 3 fouls each and one even received a
yellow card. Unfortunately, with all our effort, we did not manage to get
the ball in the net. We thank Tyler Champion for joining us and providing
his goalie talents to the game.

Final Score: West Ottawa -1 and Portage
Central -0
Loy Norrix
September 13, 2007
The Portage Central JV Mustangs traveled to
the plush fields of Loy Norrix High School on a beautiful night for soccer.
It was a sunny mild evening with temps in the mid 70’s and the Mustangs took
charge immediately on the slow moving field.
Portage Central took charge early and continued dominate the entire
game out shooting the LN Knights 29 to 1. The Mustangs showed their skill
with talented one-touches and many nice shots, the Loy Norrix keeper had a
tough job as he had plenty of action. Unfortunately at the end of the half
the score remained 0 – 0. The second half continued much the same as the
first half, lots of shots but no score. It was not until 11 minutes remained
in the game that Joe Higashi centered the ball from the right to Donny Peel,
for a score up the center. At the 10th minute, it was instant
replay, Higashi from the right to Peel at the center for goal number 2 of
the evening. In the 9th minute remaining, Brad Elliston
scored an unassisted goal. The final goal came when Cameron Restivo found
Elliston for 4th and final goal with 3 minutes left in the second half.
We were all glad to see David Tumm and Manuel Valle return to the field. We
also pray for the speedy return of Hunter Tolley and Kyle Stewart. We all
wish Zack Alkhamis luck as he has been moved up to the Varsity during Torin
Carpenter’s recovery.

Final Score: Portage Central -4 and Loy Norrix – 0
Portage Northern
September 11, 2007
The Portage Central JV Mustangs battled
rivals Portage Northern‘s JV Husky team at Portage Central. The temperature
offered a cool evening for soccer, but the winds of around 20 mph presented
a bit of a challenge to both teams. Our Mustangs played like a finely
seasoned team that came together so perfectly. PC scored the first goal of
the game, Michael Hull to Evan Carpenter. At the end of the first half it
was PC 1 and PN 0. The PN Huskies came out strong in the second half
threatening to score, but great goal keeping and a strong defense kept their
shots out of the net. Kyle Stewart saved the day on at least two occasions.
In the 11th minute of the second half Michael Hull took the kick
after a PN foul and sent it to Carson Carpenter, who booted it in for a
Mustang goal.

Final Score: Portage Central -2 and Portage
Northern – 0
The 2007 Loy Norrix High School Invitational
September 8, 2007
This invitational tournament was hosted by
Loy Norrix High School on a day that was perfect for soccer, mild temps and
sunny. The PC JV Mustangs first faced Comstock. The Mustangs offense was
strong and kept the ball in Comstock territory most of the game. Joe Higashi
scored our first goal in the 15th minute of the first half.
Followed by a goal by Evan Carpenter. Comstock managed to get a goal in
during the last 10 seconds of the first half. During the second half it was
during the 19th minute in that Evan Carpenter scored again with
an assist from Kevin Ledden. Donny Peel came up with the last goal of the
game for the Mustangs. Again near the end of the half, Comstock scored.
Final Score: Portage Central 4 and Comstock
2
The Mustangs were place in the winner’s
bracket of the tournament and faced the Lawton Blue Devils. Again the
Mustangs were on a shooting spree! It began with a ball from Brad Elliston
to Cameron Restivo and into the net. Four minutes later, Joe Higashi sent
one to Evan Carpenter for an easy score. Donny Peel, assisted by Mike Smodic,
scored the last goal of the 1st period. The second period began
with a sweet shot by Joey Higashi and tipped by Donny Peel. Cameron Restivo
scored our next goal with and assist from Carson Carpenter. And after many
offensive passes near the goal, Mike Smodic was able to get the fall in.
Final Score: Portage Central – 6 and Lawton
– 0

Wildcat country
welcomed Portage Central JV Mustangs to a hot evening of soccer. Our attack
began 6 minutes into the first half as Brad Elliston passed to the right
side of the field to Zak Yamani for a sweet shot into the net. Just 3
minutes later Joe Higashi sends one in from the left side, assisted by
Hunter Tolley. 14 minutes into the second the Zack attack team of Zak Yamani
and Zack Alkhamis scored the Mustang third goal. Our great defensive team
kept the Wildcats away from the goal.

Final Score: Portage Central – 3 and
Mattawan -0
Forest Hills Central
August 29th
The Portage Central JV Mustangs traveled to
Forest Hills Central in Grand Rapids to face the Forest Hills Central
Rangers. The Mustangs came on strong scoring the first goal of the game and
of our season. With an assist from Hunter Tolley, Evan Carpenter put one in.
Forest Hills scored and at the end of the first half the score was Forest
Hills 1 and Portage Central 1. The second half was an even battle between
the two teams, unfortunately the Rangers came up with a game winning goal.

Final Score Forest Hills -2 and Portage Central - 1
East Grand Rapids
August 21st
On August 21, Portage Central Men's JV Soccer team hit
the field hard for their 2007 season opener at East Grand Rapids High
School. The game surprisingly ended in a 0-0 tie, not at all reflecting the
dominance that the JV team displayed. The Mustang's out shot their opponents
28-0 and maintained well seasoned ball control throughout the game. We will
be expecting a great season for our young team of 11 sophomores and 9
freshmen.
