Portage Central JVs vs. Portage Northern
On a cold, windy evening with clouds
threatening to bring rain at any moment, the Mighty Mustangs of the Portage
Central Junior Varsity team was again ready to take on the Huskies of
Portage Central. In a game that lacked the excitement of a closely played
match the Mustangs controlled the ball for most of the first half. The young
Mustang s shared their skills in passing from the forwards to midfielders,
to the backfield, not allowing the Huskies much time to handle the ball. The
defensive line of Carpenter, Mathews, Frigo, VanZoeren, and Funk kept the
ball with much skill to protect goalies Drabik and Galer, though they were
able to stop any ball that did come their way. The Mighty Mustangs managed
to hit the goalpost 3 times in the game, during the 5th minute of
the game the cross bar assisted Joe Higashi in the first goal of the
evening, which began with a corner kick and a couple shots on goal and Joe
finishing it with a sweet tap past the goalie after receiving the ball from
the cross bar! The Huskies came out stronger in the second half, still our
mighty defense held them back not allowing any score by the poor dawgs,
giving Galer and Drabik shutouts. In the 50th minute of the game,
Hunter Tolley sent the ball from just above the box to Danny Busch who
placed a perfect shot into the upper ninety for the Mustangs second goal.

Portage Northern - 0

Portage Central JVs vs. Rockford
I am told it was a beautiful day for soccer
at the Portage Central Soccer fields, as this reporter sat in Indianapolis
at, what else, but soccer fields. In a testimony given to me the game
against the Rockford Rams Junior Varsity was a very physical game. Both
teams battled fiercely to take the first goal. Our defense was able to fend
off any attempts at scoring by the Rams and the offence kept the pressure on
their goalie. I was told the game was evenly matched and until the last 29
seconds the game remained deadlocked at 0. While sitting in Indianapolis, my
phone began ringing and texts came my way sharing the news that on a free
kick Donny Peel had scored the winning goal, breaking the deadlock in the
final seconds of the game! I was so ecstatic! But I never miss a PCJV game
and how on this one game that I missed did my son score the winning goal,
this reporter does not know, should I stay away more often? No way, I am a
PC soccer fan down to the core!
GO MUSTANGS!

Portage Central JVs vs. St Joe

The Portage Central Mustangs JV Soccer team
welcomed St Joe Bears to a cold windy night of soccer at the Portage Central
fields. The Mustangs controlled the game from the start, waiting until the
23rd minute for Joe Higashi as he managed to take the ball from
midfield passing many defenders as he cruised into the box and placed a
sweet goal past the unsuspecting Bears goalie. It was just four minutes
later that Joe took charge again and sent one to teammate Donny Peel for our
second goal. In the second half the Bears came out determined and showed a
lot of strength, managing to get one past Tad Drabik. Their efforts seemed
to fade as the Mustangs again took control of the game and pulled out
another fantastic win!
The JV Mustangs Congratulate the Seniors on
a season well played and thank them for the role models they are!

Portage Central JVs vs. Battle Creek
Lakeview

The Portage Central Mustangs traveled east
to Battle Creek Lakeview on another perfect evening for soccer. In a battle
of teams that appeared pretty closely matched, it was the Spartans that
struck first in the unlucky 13th minute. Just two minutes later,
Trevor McGruder was fouled the box and Joe Higashi was able to connect on
the PK. The second half began with a strong Mustang team coming out to take
on the Spartans. The Mustangs appeared to have the edge on the Spartans, but
we were unable to turn anything into a goal.

Portage Central JVs vs. Forest Hills
Eastern
September 20, 2008

Once
upon a time, in a land far far to the north, in the region of Forest Hills
Eastern, was a grand stadium. The JV Portage Central Mustangs journeyed
along a treacherous path of rebuilding and slow moving travelers, to face
the Hawks of Forest Hills Eastern. The first half of the game was
controlled by the fearless warrior Mustangs, until at the 30th
minute arrived and as our daring goal keep, Tad Drabrick (known to us a Sir
Tad Drabik), battled courageously to defend his territory, a foul was called
against him, and in a penalty kick the Forest Hills Hawks scored the first
goal of the game. The second half began with the Mustangs coming out with
the will to overcome the setback of the 1 point they gave up in the first
half. They controlled the game taking 8 shots against the Hawks goalie,
while the Hawks feared getting too close to our net and did not fire a shot
against us. As the vultures circled overhead, awaiting the Mustang defeat of
the Hawks, the clock ran out and the Mustangs were handed their first
defeat.

Portage Central vs. Plainwell
September 18, 2008

The
undefeated JV Portage Central Mustangs again traveled north to Plainwell to
take on the Trojans. The pristine turf field offered a much faster game
than the wet match played on Tuesday night. It was another perfect soccer
evening as the sky was blue with not a cloud in sight and temperatures in
the 70s. In a very physical game the Mustangs fought hard with their usual
control of the game and struck with a goal in the 23 minute on a free kick
from Donny Peel to Joe Higashi, Joe headed the ball to the goal, but the
goalie stopped the score only to bobble the ball to Trevor McGruder, who
quickly tapped it in for a spectacular goal. The Mustangs held on to their
lead and controlled the game until the referee called a foul against the
Mustangs offering a free kick to Plainwell who quickly converted it to a
goal as our defenders were setting up for the shot, no whistle was blown to
begin and the Trojans were given a gift of a goal against the mighty
Mustangs.

Plainwell - 1

Portage Central vs. Kalamazoo Central
September 16, 2008

The Portage Central Mustangs traveled North
to play the Maroon Giants of Kalamazoo Central. They played on a field of
green grass with a layer of water from the torrential rains of the past
weekend. This made for a playing field of slow rolling balls and slick
surface as the boys played. Despite the wet field, the evening was
pleasantly sunny and in the 70s. The game played with the Mustangs control
the play and keeping the ball in the area of the Giants goal much more than
on the Mustang side of the field. The first goal occurred late in the first
half when Joe Higashi crossed the ball from the right to Danny Busch who was
waiting for Joes sweet pass in front of the net, Danny easily tapped it
in. It was not again until late in the second half that the Mustangs struck
again as Donny Peel took a free kick to Tony Bernal who sent it to Tim
Patten for the second Mustang goal. Just two minutes later Trevor McGruder
found the back of the net on a pass from Hunter Tolley.

Kalamazoo Central - 0

Portage Central vs. Loy Norrix
September 11, 2008

Portage Northern vs. Portage Central
September 9, 2008
It was a perfect evening for soccer, with
temperatures in the 70s and a slight breeze in the air, when the Portage
Central Mustangs went cross town to face their rivals, Portage Northern
Huskies. As the fans filled the stands to watch the two young teams battle,
it was the Mustangs that struck the goal first. Drew Lowry crossed the ball
to the goal from the far right and found Danny Busch for a sweet header into
the net at the nine minute mark. Just ten minutes later, Ryan Howser sent
the ball to Danny Busch as he struck again, confusing the goalie as he moved
left and Danny struck the ball to his right. Carson Carpenter ended our half
with a goal in the 27th minute on a cross from Tony Bernel. Five
minutes into the second half, on a play the pros would be proud of, Donny
Peel speed down the left sideline and crossed the ball to Ryan Howser, on
the right side of the net, who sent it to the center for Carson Carpenter to
drill in! The Huskies failed to score, as our goalies, Tad Drabik and Jon
Galer fended off any attempt for them to score.
Final Score: Portage Central - 4 and
Portage Northern - 0
LOY NORRIX HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
TOURNAMENT
Kalamazoo Home School vs. Portage Central
September 5, 2008
The Portage Central JV Mustangs returned to
the Loy Norrix Tournament to defend their championship title won in 2007.
The Mustangs first faced the Kalamazoo Home School team. The two teams began
the battle with Portage Central in control of the game, it was not until the
17th minute that Carson Carpenter broke away from the back field
and scored our first goal. In the 55th minute on a foul kick
taken by Donny Peel, Ryan Howser sent one from the right side of the box to
Danny Busch on the left for a sweet goal the goalie had no chance of
defending. In another 3 minutes, Austin Funk sent one to Danny Busch. Three
minutes later a corner kick by Donny Peel was sent in front of the net for
an easy header and score by Tony Bernal. The Austin team of Austin Funk to
Austin Nichols gave us our 5th goal. This sent the Mustangs to
the finals later in the day.
Final Score: Portage Central -5 and
Kalamazoo Home School - 0
Portage Central vs. Loy Norrix
Like in 2007, the JV Mustangs faced Loy
Norrix in the finals match. Like in the game against KHS, PC controlled the
game, although Loy Norrix proved to be a stronger foe than the Mustangs
faced in the first game. It was not until the 34th minute in the
first half that the Mustangs were able to connect with the goal. Austin
Nichols took a shot from the top of the box that the goalie deflected and
Trevor McGruder was there to head the ball into the net. In the 50th
minute Ryan Howser, from a shot up the center by Donny Peel, had an easy
header in. With 3 minutes left in the game Austin Nichols had a sweet shot
from the right into the upper 90 of the net.
Final Score: Portage Central 4 and Loy
Norrix 0
PC JVS ARE AGAIN THE
LNHSIT WINNERS! CONGRATULATIONS BOYS
Battle Creek Central at Portage Central
September 4, 2008
The JV Portage Central Mustangs faced
Battle Creek Central on a night that was not the most favorable for a soccer
match. With a cold front moving in, and a steady heavy rain, the game began.
The Mustangs struck first with a goal in only the 3rd minute of
play with a pass from Hunter Tolley to Danny Busch. After this the goal
defended by the Bear Cats became a magnet for the Mustang squad. In the 8th
minute Hunter Tolley scored on a pass from Donny Peel. Next in the twelfth
minute, Joe Higashi scored on a sweet touch from Hunter, in the sixteenth
minute, Drew Lowry made it goal number 4 on a pass from Joe Higashi, goal 5
came in the twenty-fifth minute by Austin Nichols from Tim Patten, the next
goal was scored by Trevor McGruder assisted by Joe Higashi, and just before
the first half ended pass from Brad Dillard found Donny Peel for the seventh
goal, and then the first half ended. The second half began and it took the
Mustangs 20 minutes to find the net for the 8th goal to end the
game, thanks to Joe Higashi. The Bear Cats never threatened to score and our
Goal Keepers, Tad Drabik and Jon Galer received easy shutouts.

Forest Hills Central
Monday, August 25, 2008
The JV Portage Central Mustangs faced
Forest Hills Central on a sunny mild day that had a bit of a westerly wind.
The home opener for the JV team was a battle of defenses as neither team was
able to get the ball in the net. The offence fought to break through the
Forest Hills defense and had a few close shots on goal, but none of them
making the mark.

West Ottawa
August 21, 2008
The JV Portage Central Mustangs started
their soccer season with an impressive first team showing against West
Ottawa. The young team with 6 sophomores and the balance of the team from
the freshman class put on a great show of teamwork with great passing, solid
defense and awesome goal tending. The first goal of the 2008 PC JV season
occurred in the 24th minute, on a corner kick from Donny Peel,
Austin Nichols was at the West Ottawa goal to insure that it was in. Later
in the 38th minute, Hunter Tolley drove the ball down the
midfield and sent it to Austin Funk for a long strike that caught the goalie
off guard. Our tough defense and goal keeping held the West Ottawa team to a
scoreless game. Congratulations to the JV and Coach McKenzie on an
outstanding season opener.
