Monday Portage Central and Portage Northern Women's Soccer teams took the field in what was sure to be a great cross town rival. This game in itself will be an exciting night of soccer, however there is an interesting fact about some players on both teams. Twelve of the players that took the field Monday night had a special link, even though Monday they would be opponents, at one time they were teammates. When they were 9 and 10 year olds, just learning the tactics and technical aspects of the game, they all played on the U-11 Portage Lightning under coach Ron Prange. The Portage Lightning Team was Division champs and won many tournaments together, learning the skills that would allow them all to make it to the high school level. It is a testimony to a Coach Prange's coaching ability to have 12 players off that young team of 15 players to end up this season all representing their high schools and sharing a love for the game. Coach Prange and his wife, Mary, should feel a sense of pride for all the time and dedication they put in to the youth soccer program. Monday night when the girls took the field, although no longer wearing a common green and gold jersey with a lightning bolt on the chest, the players will remember their common link and play with tribute to a great youth coach who instilled in them a desire for this great game, we call soccer.

Brighton
Friday, June 11th

Portage Central made the return trip to Holt High School to meet Brighton in the region 1 final.  The Brighton Bulldogs came into the match as district 4 champions with an overall record of 16-2-0 and much state tournament experience.   They were division 1 state runner-up last year and have 12 seniors on their roster.  The experience showed in the first half as Brighton's physical play set the tone and took the Mustangs out of their normal game.  While the Bulldogs physical play enabled them to maintain most of the possession in the first half, they were never able to seriously threaten the goal and the half ended scoreless.  After the half, the Lady Mustangs adjusted and began to control the ball and pressure the Brighton goal.  The final 15 minutes of the half, PC had constant pressure on the Brighton goal but were unable to secure a score and regulation ended 0-0.  The first overtime was more of the same for PC.  They maintained constant pressure on Brighton which finally resulted in a goal by Emily Berner with 2:34 left which would have ended the game for the PC 1-0 victory.  The PC celebration was short lived as the linesman called a controversial offsides on the scramble in front of the goal.  Unfortunately, this outstanding game by both teams ended in the second overtime on another controversial call as Brighton converted a PK with less than 12 minutes remaining for the 1-0 victory.  Congratulations to Brighton who advances to play Northville in the state semi-final and congratulations to the Portage Central Lady Mustangs for an outstanding season including a conference championship, a conference tournament championship, a district championship and an overall record of 22-1-2!  Good luck to our five seniors Meredith Alexander, Emily Berner, Kate Crawford, Connie Rogers and Caitlyn Vargason.

Forest Hills Northern
Tuesday, June 8th

Portage Central traveled to Holt High School to meet Forest Hills Northern in the Region 1 semi-final game.  The FHN Huskies came into the match as District 1 champions with an overall record of 12-2-4.  PC pressured early when Megan Brown stole the ball in the offensive third and was awarded a PK as the last FHN defender was called for the foul in the box as she headed toward goal.  Sophomore Emily Peterson stepped up and confidently converted the PK for what would prove to be the winning margin in the 2nd minute of the game.  The remainder of the first half was dominated by defensive play by both teams with PC registering a mere 3 shots on goal and FHN closing the half with only 4 shots on goal.  The defensive battle continued in the second half as both teams had their few offensive chances halted by either excellent team defense or outstanding goalie play.  While FHN was able to hold the PC offense off the score board while only allowing 7 shots on goal for the game, the PC defense was even stronger.  The defensive play of Kate Crawford, Emily Peterson, Lindsay Peterson, Connie Rogers and Ashleigh Carpentier held FHN to a single shot on goal during the second half allowing GK Lindsey Wrege to register her 14th shutout of the season.

West Ottawa
Saturday, June 5th

Portage Central followed a familiar recipe of strong defense and balanced scoring to to win the District 2 Championship 4-0 over a good West Ottawa team.  PC was able to secure the 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Ashleigh Carpentier  delivered a cross into the box which Senior Emily Berner volleyed home.  The half ended with the 1-0 score due to outstanding defensive play by both teams.  PC only placed 5 shots on goal and WO was held to just 1 shot on goal.  The second half began with a continuation of the great defense, but PC was able to net the 2-0 lead in the 50th minute.  Sophomore Emily Peterson's free-kick from about 15-yard outside the box hit the crossbar and Freshman Christine Ketteman hit the rebound past the West Ottawa goalie.  The Lady Mustangs continued to pressure and expanded the lead to 3-0 on an outstanding combination play in the box between Sophomores Megan Brown and Anne Rose.  In the 66th minute, Brown received a pass at the top of the box which she touched to Rose who immediately one-touched back to a cutting Brown who placed the shot into the lower right corner.  The final score of 4-0 was secured when a streaking Anne Rose was taken down in the box in the 72nd minute.  Sophomore defender Emily Peterson stepped up and drilled the PK into the lower left corner. GK Lindsey Wrege and Kelly Carlson combined for PC's 7th shutout in a row and their 15th of the season as the Mustangs won the final shot comparison by 22 (18 on goal) to 10 (2 on goal).  Central advances to the regional tournament on Tuesday against the winner of District 1.

Portage Northern
Thursday, June 3rd

Portage Central traveled across town to face rival Portage Northern for the third time this year, but the first time on the Huskie's home field.  The Mustang's struck early in the match when Sophomore Anne Rose received a slot pass from Megan Brown and beat the Northern goalie for the 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the match.  The rest of the first half play was fairly even as both teams created quality scoring chances, but the half ended with PC maintaining their 1-0 lead.  Central came out strong to start the second half and consistently pressured Northern's goal.  The Mustang's were able to increase the lead in the 47th minute when Senior Emily Berner stole the ball and proceeded into the Northern box and patiently beat the goalie for the 2-0 lead.  The final three goal margin was delivered in the 61st minute when Berner passed to Brown who dribbled across outside the box and lofted a shot into the top left corner of the net.  The Central defense recorded their 6th shutout in a row and their 14th of the year with an outstanding performance by Junior GK Lindsey Wrege who repeatedly denied the Northern attack.  PC will face West Ottawa in the District 2 final on Saturday while Portage Northern completes their 2004 campaign with a final record of 13-5-2.

Kalamazoo Central
Tuesday, June 1st

Portage Central played their last home game of the season as they hosted Kalamazoo Central in the first round of District 2 playoffs.  The Lady Mustangs started early when Sophomore Anne Rose received a pass from Megan Brown and beat the Giants' goalie for the 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute.  PC continued to pressure the goal and built the early margin to 2-0 when Brown scored on an assist by Senior Emily Berner at the 11:24 mark.  In spite of being down early, K-Central would not quit.  KC standout Cassie Dickerson escaped for a break-away, but PC keeper Lindsey Wrege made an outstanding diving save to deny the goal and maintain the shutout.  The Mustangs secured the halftime lead of 3-0 when Jesse Noble finished a cross from Ashleigh Carpentier in the 25th minute.  Play was fairly even the remainder of the half as PC ended with 8 shots (5 on goal) compared to KC with 5 shots (3 on goal)The Lady Mustangs returned from the locker room focused for the second half and dominated time of possession.  Rose netted her second goal of the match with an assist to Ellen Molenaar with 15:18 remaining in the contest.  The final margin of 5-0 came as Ellen Molenaar finished the rebound of a restart by Emily Peterson at the 10:09 mark.  The PC defense was dominate in the second half as they denied KC any shots while Lindsey Wrege and Kelly Carlson combined for the 13th shutout of the year.  The Mustangs will face cross town rival Portage Northern for the third time this year for their second round match on Thursday at Northern.

Portage Northern
Wednesday, May 26th

The Portage Northern Huskies traveled to Portage Central with hopes of avenging their early season 1-0 loss to the Mustangs.  With an overall record of 12-3-2, the Huskies had been on a hot streak by winning their last five games by a combined score of 29-0.  Freshman Christine Ketteman put an early end to the Northern shutout streak as she took a pass from Ashleigh Carpentier and lobbed a shot over the PN goalie and into the net for the 1-0 PC lead just 13 minutes into the match.  Northern charged back with an outstanding chance of their own, but PC goalie Lindsey Wrege made a diving save to her right to deny the Huskies.  The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute when Megan Brown struck a solid shot from the top of the box which beat the PN goalie to the upper left corner with the assist going to Carpentier for her team leading 22nd.  The 2-0 score held for the half as PC out shot their cross-town rival 12 (7 on goal) to 6 (4 on goal).  The final goal of the game came in the 55th minute as Senior Captain Emily Berner received a pass from Ketteman outside the box and beat a diving Northern goalie to provide the final margin of 3-0.   Once again, the PC defense kept the opponent scoreless as GK Lindsey Wrege registered her 11th shutout of the season.  A short awards ceremony followed the match as both teams were presented medals for their outstanding league performance.  Both PC and PN begin Districts competition on Tuesday when Central hosts Kalamazoo Central and Northern hosts Zeeland.

Stevensville Lakeshore
Monday, May 24th

Top seeded PC played host to 4th seeded Stevensville Lakeshore in the semi-finals of the SMAC conference tournament.  The match-up was the third time the opponents have met this season.  PC won the two previous meetings, both played at Lakeshore’s home field, 3-0 and 2-1 respectively.  The Lady Mustangs wasted little time getting started as Anne Rose hit Ashleigh Carpentier streaking down the left sideline and Carpentier hit a great shot to beat the Lakeshore goalie to the far top corner for the goal.  PC continued to dominate play throughout the first half and was rewarded in the 35th minute with a 2-0 lead when Megan Brown received a pass from Carpentier at the top of the box and struck a solid shot into the back of the net.  The half ended with PC holding a 2-0 lead with a shot advantage of 16 (7 on goal) to 3.  The second half was marked by an outstanding performance from the Central defense.  Goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege registered her 10th shutout of the season with the assistance of great defensive play by Emily Peterson, Lindsay Peterson, Kate Crawford and Caitlin Buckstaff.  The final score was 2-0 with the Mustangs placing 9 of their 22 shots on goal compared to holding Stevensville to 6 total shots with 4 on goal.  Portage Central will host 2nd seeded cross-town rival Portage Northern in the conference tournament final Wednesday.

The lady Mustangs hosted Marshall in the second round of SMAC tournament play Wednesday with a decisive 4-0 victory.   The first Mustangs goal came in the 11th minute when Ashleigh Carpentier served a ball into the box that Megan Brown touched and Christine Ketteman finished.  Ketteman's goal would be the only goal in the first half. The Mustangs out shot Marshall 17-1 during the first 40 minutes of play. When play resumed in the second half, PC got fired up as Anne Rose beat the keeper on with a ball served to her by Brown in the 46th minute.  Just  six minutes later, Brown would get her third assist of the evening when she found Ketteman again to make the score 3-0.  The final goal would be tallied when Carpentier connected off a pass from Emily Peterson.  Goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege would post her 9th shutout of the year after making an outstanding save in the first half.  The Mustangs placed a total of 21 shots on goal to Marshall's one shot on goal.

Fruitport
Friday, May 14th

The Lady Mustangs traveled to Fruitport and came home with their second 2-1 road victory of the week.  The first half ended in a 0-0 draw as the majority of the play remained in the midfield.  While PC out shot the home team10-5 i the half, they were only able to place two on goal.  The Mustangs came out strong to start the second half, but they soon found themselves in uncharted waters, trailing for the first time this season, as Fruitport converted off a corner-kick scramble for the 1-0 lead.  The Mustangs regrouped and continued to play strong as Junior Jesse Noble tied the game in the 65th minute with the assist credited to Meredith Alexander.  With a mere 10 minutes left in the contest, Noble was fouled while dribbling up the sideline.  The come-from-behind victory was secured when Junior Ashleigh Carpentier delivered her team leading 16th assist into the box where Megan Brown headed it home for the 2-1 lead.  The final shot count had PC with 28 (13 on goal) compared to Fruitport with 8 (1 on goal).

Stevensville Lakeshore
Monday, May 10th

The Lady Mustangs secured home field for the SMAC tournament with a hard fought 2-1 victory against Lakeshore on a wet and windy night in Stevensville.  While PC had won a decisive victory 3-0 when these teams met earlier this season, Stevensville had upset on their mind tonight.  The Mustangs struck early when Sophomore Megan Brown received a cross from Ashleigh Carpentier and drove home the 1-0 lead just 1:57 into the match.  The remainder of the first half play was back-and-forth until Brown hit Ketteman who scored for the 2-0 lead at 33:05.  The 2-0 score held for the half thanks to an outstanding save by PC goalie Lindsey Wrege to knock a lined shot over the cross bar.  The second half play remained even until Lakeshore closed the gap to 2-1 on a breakaway in the 49th minute.  A revitalized Lakeshore team continued to pressure resulting in Wrege making another outstanding save to secure the 2-1 win for the Mustangs.  The final statistics were very even with each team registering 14 shots with PC placing 7 on goal compared to Lakeshore's 6 on goal.  These teams will not meet again this year unless both are able to reach the conference tournament finals.

Okemos
Saturday, May 8th

The Lady Mustangs enjoyed their best offensive production of the season as five different girls netted goals with Senior Captain Emily Berner leading the way with a second half hat-trick.  A talented, yet injury depleted, Okemos got an early indication of the Mustang offense when Megan Brown scored off an assist by Christine Kettemen just 6:35 into the contest for the 1-0 lead.  Anne Rose netted the second goal at the 16:22 mark unassisted as she dribbled through the middle and beat the opposing goalie to her right.  Kettemen tallied the 3-0 lead just two minutes later as she hit home a corner kick by Ashleigh Carpentier.  The first half ended with PC leading 3-0 and registering 11 shots (6 on goal) while not allowing a shot by Okemos.  The PC corner kicks continued to pay off in the second half as Emily Berner scored header goals on two consecutive corners by Ashleigh Carpentier at 35:38 and 29:29 marks.  Berner delivered her hat-trick less than four minutes later when she hit a pass from Rose off the crossbar and into the goal for the 6-0 PC lead.  The final Mustang goal was a perfectly placed shot by Carpentier with the assist going to Brittany Crawford.  Okemos was able to avoid the shutout when the converted on a PK with 0:35 remaining in the contest.  Portage Central finished the game with 28 shots (14 on goal) while Okemos tallied 5 shots (4 on goal).

Battle Creek Lakeview
Monday, May 3rd

The Mustangs hosted BC Lakeview for the second time within two weeks.  With Lakeview placing first in the Eastern Division of the SMAC, the winner of this contest would have the upper hand for securing the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.  While this would normally be incentive enough, PC was also honoring their five seniors Meredith Alexander, Emily Berner, Kate Crawford, Connie Rogers and Caitlyn Vargason.  An inspired defensive effort led the Mustangs with Lindsay Wrege registering her eighth shutout of the season assisted by Emily Peterson, Lindsay Peterson, Crawford, Caitlin Buckstaff and Aubrey Brown.  They held Lakeview to only two shots for the evening with only one reaching Wrege.  The first of the PC goals was scored by Anne Rose with an assist to Megan Brown less than 14 minutes into the contest.  Ashleigh Carpentier gave PC the 2-0 lead with a blistering shot from outside the box with the assist going to Alexander.  While PC out shot BC 17-1 in the first half, the halftime score remained a close 2-0.  The second half consisted of more Mustang dominance with many scoring opportunities, but a stingy Lakeview defense and a couple superb saves kept the game close.  The lead was extended to 3-0 when Brown received a pass from Carpentier and placed a shot into the corner.  This remained the final score as PC registered 31 total shots with 16 on goal.

West Ottawa
Thursday, April 29th

After already defeating two conference foes this week to clinch the SMAC Central, the Mustangs hosted West Ottawa for a challenging non-conference match.  The Mustangs played well early as they were able to utilize strong combination play for several quality scoring chances.  They were rewarded in the 20th minute as Sophomore Anne Rose received a pass from Megan Brown, made a move around the visiting goalie, and delivered the 1-0 lead for her team.  After even play on both sides, the half ended with the 1-0 PC lead and the Mustangs winning the shots-on-goal battle 7-1.  The Mustangs began the second half with more solid combination play.  In the 48th minute, Rose flicked a ball onto Brown who dribbled into the box and delivered a ball to Jesse Noble who connected for the 2-0 PC lead.  The Mustangs took a commanding 3-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining as Senior Captain Emily Berner finished a cross in the box by Anne Rose.  West Ottawa continued to fight until they were able to get on the board with a goal at the 70:36 mark.  The final score was 3-1 with PC registering 19 shots (14 on goal) and West Ottawa tallying 13 shots (7 on goal).

Mattawan
Wednesday, April 28th

The Mustangs came into Wednesday's evening game knowing that a win against Mattawan (3-0-1) would secure them a first place finish in the Central division of the SMAC and Portage Central came through with a 3-1 win.  The wind became a factor in yet another match that the Mustangs would play in this season, with strong gusts making any play in the air difficult.  The conditions would benefit the Wildcats the first half but PC maintained good possession.  The first goal of the evening would take place 19 minutes in as Anne Rose brought the ball up field and passed to Megan Brown for a strong shot on the keeper.  The Mattawan goal made a nice stop, batting the ball to the ground but the loose ball in front of the goal was quickly cleaned up by Caitlyn Vargason to put PC on the board.  The Mustangs would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.  In the second half, the Mustangs would have the wind advantage but the Wildcats rallied.  Mattawan got a shot off to tie up the match in the fifty-third minute.  Portage stepped up to the challenge and scored at 69:15 when Brown found Christine Ketteman to give the advantage once again to the Mustangs.  Ashleigh Carpentier scored her third goal of the season when she finished a ball served in by Brown.  The Mustangs out shot the Wildcats 18-9 for the match, 9-3 on goal.

Kalamazoo Central
Monday, April 26th

Portage Central visited the new soccer complex of SMAC central  team, Kalamazoo Central to become 4-0 in conference play Monday night.  The Mustangs  tallied their first goal in the third minute of play when Megan Brown hit Emily Berner in front of the goal to begin the scoring.  The next goal would be set up by a Kalamazoo Central hand ball that occurred in the box after a PC corner kick.  Brown took the penalty kick, finding the corner to make it 2-0.  Ashleigh Carpentier brought down the ball that assisted Caitlyn Vargason.   Vargason scored her first goal of the season in the fifteenth minute of the game.  Another Mustang to put a score on the board was Meredith Alexander when she received a ball from Jesse Noble.  The last goal of the first half came from Noble as she finished a ball into the net, the assist came from Brown.  The halftime score was 5-0 Portage Central.  The defense continued their strong play as the second half began allowing only two shots from the Maroon Giants.  The Mustangs final goal came in the 79th minute of the game as Vargason was driving into the box with the ball and was tackled from behind giving the Kalamazoo Central player a red card and awarding PC with a penalty kick.  Alexander stepped up to take the shot and scored her second goal of the evening. The final score was 6-0.  Lindsay Wrege added another shutout to her record.

Battle Creek Lakeview
Friday, April 23rd

Portage Central delivered their best team performance of the season tonight against Battle Creek Lakeview of the SMAC East.  The Mustangs began the game with great intensity and were rewarded quickly.  After Anne Rose was fouled 10 yards outside the box, Sophomore Emily Peterson delivered a perfect restart into the top left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead at the 4:10 mark.  PC continued to control the ball and the game until they extended their lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute when Megan Brown delivered a cross into the box which Ashleigh Carpentier knocked down to Emily Berner who drove home the shot.  While the Lady Mustangs continued to pressure the goal, the half ended with the score 2-0 and PC out shooting their opponent by a margin of 12-1 with five on goal.  The pressure continued well into the second half as the Mustangs created several good chances on goal, but the Lakeview goalie continued to make outstanding saves to keep her team in the game.  Junior Moira Feeney extended the PC lead with 7:06 remaining in the match with her first goal of the year as she connected on a Carpentier cross.  At the 1:50 mark, all-state forward Brie Ballard was able to break through an outstanding PC defense to tally the loan goal for Lakeview.   The game ended with a 3-1 PC victory as the Mustangs total shot margin was 31-3!  An great job by the entire team, especially the defense lead by an outstanding performance by Freshman Lindsay Peterson.

Loy Norrix
Wednesday, April 21st

The Mustangs continued their conference schedule with a trip to the newly developed soccer facility at Loy Norrix.  PC dominated time of possession in the first half, but a strong defensive effort by Loy Norrix combined with a stingy goal post and crossbar, kept the Mustangs off the board until the 5:14 mark when Junior Ashleigh Carpentier beat the goalie with an assist to Megan Brown.  The Mustangs found a boost of energy from the goal and continued to pressure which resulted in Christine Ketteman hitting Brown with a perfect pass as she cut across the box and delivered the second PC goal of the night.  The half ended with the Mustangs up 2-0 and holding a shot advantage of 18-0.   The Lady Mustangs continued their possession dominance in the second half, but the Loy Norrix defense held PC off the board for a final score of 2-0.  Lindsay Wrege recorded her sixth shutout of the young season as PC maintained a 37-1 shot advantage with 19 placed on goal.

Portage Northern
Monday, April 19th

A large crowd turned out at Portage Central to watch a SMAC match against the Northern Huskies.  As to be expected, this rivalry was a closely contested game to the finish.  The first half was a defensive struggle as both teams failed to generate much offense.  While Northern enjoyed the wind advantage, PC was able to register an advantage in shots by 6-3, but only one PC shot was on goal compared to all three for Northern.  The half ended scoreless.  The second half wind was to the advantage of the Mustangs and they used it to maintain most of the pressure throughout the half.  Although the shots advantage continued to widen for PC, it appeared that the game was heading to a scoreless tie and into overtime until the 75th minute when Ashleigh Carpentier stole the ball from PN and hit Emily Berner in the midfield.  Berner connected on a strike toward the lower left corner of the goal.  While PN goalie Mollie Brooks made an outstanding effort to get a hand on the shot, the ball found the back of the net to provide Central the 1-0 victory.  The final shots margin was 18-6 with each team placing five on goal.  The defense played another outstanding game helping Lindsay Wrege register her 5th shutout in seven games.

The first match of the day paired two of the strongest programs in West Michigan.  The first half was a very defensive game as PC controlled most of the play, but was unable to generate many quality chances at goal.  The half ended in a 0-0 draw as the two team combined for only nine shots with PC out-shooting Grand Haven by a margin of 6-3.  Portage Central continued to control the play in the second half and put much more pressure on goal resulting in many quality chances.  PC was denied the chance for the win twice by the crossbar, once on a penalty kick.  The game ended 0-0 with PC out-shooting Grand Haven 20-5.  An outstanding performance by the defense led by Emily Peterson, Lindsay Peterson, Kate Crawford and Jesse Noble.  Lindsey Wrege registered her third shutout of the young season.

Traverse City Central

PC started their second game of the day with a flurry.  The scoring began with Christine Ketteman finishing a corner kick by Ashleigh Carpentier in the fourth minute to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.  The scoring continued less than five minutes later when Ketteman received a pass from Carpnetier and fed Emily Berner in the box who beat the opposing goalie with a solid strike for the 2-0 margin.  PC continued to control play until late in the half when Carrie Buckel of Traverse City broke free and closed the margin to 2-1 with a solid finish.  It was a scoreless second half until TCC was able to tie the score 2-2 with less than five minutes remaining.  While PC pressured for the final four minutes, the two teams played to a 2-2 tie with PC out-shooting TCC 19-5.

Midland Dow

Once again, Portage Central started fast in their final game of the day.  Freshman Christine Ketteman scored with assists going to Megan Brown and Ashleigh Carpentier less than two minutes into the match.  The Mustangs continued to control the play in the first half and gained a 2-0 advantage when Senior Emily Berner received a pass from Jennie Perrin outside the box and delivered a strike for her second goal of the day at the 20:41 mark.  PC out-shot their opponent 13-2 in the first half.  The Mustangs started even faster in the second half as Ketteman received the kickoff and immediately hit Megan Brown in stride.  Brown dribbled through the middle of the Dow defense and scored.  While PC continued to control the pace for the remainder of the match, the final score was 3-0 with the Mustangs holding a 22-6 shot margin.   Lindsey Wrege registered the shutout in the goal.

Battle Creek Central
Thursday, April 15th

After over a two week layoff, the Mustangs returned to action with a decisive 5-0 conference victory at Battle Creek Central.  The first goal was scored in the second minute of the game as Ashleigh Carpentier penetrated deep into the left corner and delivered a great cross in front of the goal that Megan Brown volleyed home.  This duo teamed a second time in the 13th minute with a virtual instant replay.  Although PC continued to dominate play the rest of the half by out-shooting BC Central 16-0, they finished the half with the 2-0 lead.  The second half started much like the first with Carpentier assisting Brown for her hat-trick goal.  As PC continued to mount the pressure, Christine Ketteman  slotted a ball in the box to Connie Rogers for her first goal of the season to give PC a 4-0 lead 10-minutes into the second half.  The final goal of the game came from Brittany Crawford as she finished a rebound of a blistering shot by Anne Rose.  Portage ending the game out-shooting Battle Creek by a margin of 34-0.  Lindsay Wrege and Kelly Carlson combined for the shutout in goal.

GRFH Central
Tuesday, March 30th

Portage Central held on to win their home opener against a very strong Forest Hills Central team 2-1.  Megan Brown headed home a ball lofted into the box by Emily Berner in the tenth minute to give PC the early lead.  After a 15-minute delay due to lightning, FHC appeared to take control of play until the 39th minute when Anne Rose flicked a restart from Emily Berner onto Megan Brown who finished for a 2-0 PC halftime lead.  Although Forest Hills Central pressured PC most of the second half, a solid effort by the defense only allowed a single goal with Molly Gerst scoring in the 51st minute.

Dear BJ Snow and the entire Portage Central Soccer Organization,

On behalf of our athletes and our entire Special Olympics soccer program, I would like to thank you for inviting us to be a special part of your home game on Thursday.  Our athletes thoroughly enjoyed being included in such a neat evening.  It was a very big deal to them to have the opportunity to play on an official field, not to mention playing under the big lights.  Thank you also for the generous offer of treating our players to refreshments after our scrimmage.  We really appreciate your continued support of our local organization.

Thank you, and the best of luck to you in the rest of your season.
