Brighton
Friday, June 11th
Portage Central made the return trip to Holt High School to meet
Brighton in the region 1 final. The Brighton Bulldogs came into the match as district 4
champions with an overall record of 16-2-0 and much state
tournament experience. They were division 1 state
runner-up last year and have 12 seniors on their roster.
The experience showed in the first half as Brighton's physical
play set the tone and took the Mustangs out of their normal
game. While the Bulldogs physical play enabled them to
maintain most of the possession in the first half, they were
never able to seriously threaten the goal and the half ended
scoreless. After the half, the Lady Mustangs adjusted and
began to control the ball and pressure the Brighton goal.
The final 15 minutes of the half, PC had constant pressure on
the Brighton goal but were unable to secure a score and
regulation ended 0-0. The first overtime was more of the
same for PC. They maintained constant pressure on Brighton
which finally resulted in a goal by Emily Berner with 2:34 left
which would have ended the game for the PC 1-0 victory.
The PC celebration was short lived as the linesman called a
controversial offsides on the scramble in front of the goal.
Unfortunately, this outstanding game by both teams ended in the
second overtime on another controversial call as Brighton
converted a PK with less than 12 minutes remaining for the 1-0
victory. Congratulations to Brighton who advances to play
Northville in the state semi-final and congratulations to the
Portage Central Lady Mustangs for an outstanding season
including a conference championship, a conference tournament
championship, a district championship and an overall record of
22-1-2! Good luck to our five seniors Meredith Alexander,
Emily Berner, Kate Crawford, Connie Rogers and Caitlyn Vargason.
Forest Hills Northern
Tuesday, June 8th
Portage Central traveled to Holt High School to meet Forest
Hills Northern in the Region 1 semi-final game. The FHN Huskies came into the match as District 1
champions with an overall record of 12-2-4. PC pressured
early when Megan Brown stole the ball in the offensive third and
was awarded a PK as the last FHN defender was called for the
foul in the box as she headed toward goal. Sophomore Emily
Peterson stepped up and confidently converted the PK for what
would prove to be the winning margin in the 2nd minute of the
game. The remainder of the first half was dominated by
defensive play by both teams with PC registering a mere 3 shots
on goal and FHN closing the half with only 4 shots on goal.
The defensive battle continued in the second half as both teams
had their few offensive chances halted by either excellent team
defense or outstanding goalie play. While FHN was able to
hold the PC offense off the score board while only allowing 7
shots on goal for the game, the PC defense was even stronger.
The defensive play of Kate Crawford, Emily Peterson, Lindsay
Peterson, Connie Rogers and Ashleigh Carpentier held FHN to a
single shot on goal during the second half allowing GK Lindsey
Wrege to register her 14th shutout of the season.

of avenging their early season 1-0 loss to the Mustangs.
With an overall record of 12-3-2, the Huskies had been on a hot

The Mustangs came into Wednesday's evening game knowing that

but PC maintained good possession. The first goal of the evening would

thank you for inviting us to be a special part of your home
game on Thursday. Our athletes thoroughly enjoyed being
included in such a neat evening. It was a very big deal to
them to have the opportunity to play on an official field,
not to mention playing under the big lights. Thank you also
for the generous offer of treating our players to
refreshments after our scrimmage. We really appreciate your
continued support of our local organization.
Thank you, and the best of luck
to you in the rest of your season.
