SPRING 2008 GAME SUMMARIES

Okemos
Region Final
Saturday, June 7th

The Lady Mustangs welcomed Okemos for the Regional Final which would be a rematch of an early season match that PC won 2-0.  Okemos started the game with great energy, but the Lady Mustangs countered as the first half proved to be a defensive struggle with most of the play in the midfield.  Portage Central was able to gain the momentum heading to the locker room as Sophomore Shelby Humphries scored on a feed by Freshman Paige Wester with 6 seconds left on the clock.  The second half played much like the first with both teams working hard, but finding few quality scoring chances.  Okemos was able to tie the match in the 49th minute as they converted a quick restart into a quality cross which was confidently finished.  An awakened PC was able to net the game winner less than eight minutes later as WEster took a pass from Junior Katelyn Weissert and broke down the sideline for a mini break-away and beat the Okemos keeper with a low shot to the far post.  With the Regional Title, the Lady Mustangs advance to face AA Huron on Wednesday for the right to play for the Division I title.

Brighton
Region Semi-Final
Tuesday, June 3rd

Portage Central hosted undefeated Brighton Tuesday, the first game of the evening in the region semi-final with Rockford and Okemos scheduled for the second match.  As it seems to be in this stage of the tournament, there is always a great deal of history between programs.  The Mustangs faced one of their toughest competitors as they took to the pitch.  As the game began both Brighton and Portage Central made several good attacking attempts but PC was able to strike first.  In the 25th minute of play Senior Mae LaFave sent a ball in to Sophomore Jordan Wolf.  Wolf connected to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead.  Great defensive efforts were mounted by both teams as the halftime score remained 1-0 PC.  The Bulldogs would not go away as there was a scramble in front of the Mustangs goal and Brighton tied up the match 1-1.  As the game went on the crowd looked for a goal  to end the match only to find both teams gearing up for overtime play.  Neither team scored in either of the 2 - 15 minute overtime periods, which meant the match would be determined by penalty kicks.  Brighton had the first kicker up and Junior Samantha Bowditch made a great stop for PC.  Central's Senior Jenny Beebe stepped up to take the first shot for the Mustangs and converted.  Brighton returned to the line and Bowditch made the stop again but went across her line, the Bulldog kicker was given and second opportunity and scored. Senior Mary Larkin was next up for PC and struck her shot into the goal (PC going up 2-1).  Brighton's third shooter attempt was yet again stopped by Bowditch.  Sophomore Lauren Brown, PC's third shooter found the back of the net as well put the Mustangs up 3-1.  The fourth Bulldog shot was caught by Bowditch to send Portage Central on the the Region Final against Okemos on Friday.  An outstanding effort by all PC players - offensive and defensive. Final Score Portage Central 1 - Brighton 1, PK's Portage Central 3 - Brighton 1.

East Kentwood
District Final
Thursday, May 31st

As the Mustangs prepared to go into the district final game, the team was aware of the history between Portage Central and East Kentwood.  Both teams knew it would be a hard fought battle to be named district champs.  The Mustangs pressured the Falcon goal throughout the first half to have several good scoring opportunities and were denied until 17th minute of play.  Central's Freshman Paige Wester worked the balled up the field and made a cross in front of the goal mouth to find the charging Freshman Charlie Socia. The Mustangs were invigorated as they went up 1-0.  Both teams mounted their own offenses to put more numbers on the board, but neither team would capitalize in the first half.  The Mustangs came out even more determined after halftime when the "Wester / Socia" duo added another goal in the PC column.  The final goal of the match came 15 minutes later when Freshman Lunden Carpenter found Sophomore Lauren Brown in a face-off with the Kentwood goalkeeper.  Brown's first shot was knocked down, she recovered the ball and finished it into the net.  The Falcons were unable to recover from the 3-0 deficit and Portage Central was awarded the District Champion Trophy.  Goalkeepers Junior Sam Bowditch and Freshman Mara Bennett share the shutout with the outstanding Portage Central defensive unit!  Final Score Portage Central 3 - East Kentwood 0.  The Mustangs face Brighton on Tuesday at 5:00 in the first round of regional play at Portage Central.

The Mustangs took 12 shots to the Panthers 1 in the 1st half.  In the second half the Mustangs challenging the WO goal numerous times but Portage Central was denied any additional goals.  Just as the match seemed about ready to be rapped up West Ottawa's #6 scored in the last minute of play. The Panthers were awarded a penalty kick with 57 seconds left on the clock and made it good.  The Mustang defenders held their opponents to just three shots in the second half as PC attempted 14. shots.  The PC Senior defenders (Jenny Beebe, Kelly L'Esperance, Mae LaFave and Mary Larkin) played tough as they prepared for their special Graduation evening.  Good luck Seniors!  The final score Portage Central 2 - West Ottawa 1. Portage Northern
SMAC Final
Wednesday, May 21st

The Lady Mustangs hosted the Portage Northern Huskies for the SMAC Tournament Championship.  Central was riding a 50 game conference win streak that included the last five regular season championships and the last four SMAC Tournament Championships, but they would be denied their 5th in a row as the Huskies capitalized on their second half opportunities with great efficiency to take the hard fought 3-2 decision.  The first half was a standard Central/Northern defensive struggle of two contrasting styles.  Central attempted to break down the Northern defense with their passing game and Northern counter-attacked with their talented forwards and more direct play, but both defenses held strong until Freshman Paige Wester split three Northern defenders and was awarded a PK in the 31st minute.  Sophomore Lauren Brown stepped in to take the PC kick and placed a good ball toward the lower right corner.  Senior Jillian Karrick, the Huskie keeper, anticipated and made a diving save to keep the clean sheet.  Central remained confident and kept pressuring the goal and finally broke through in the 36th minute when Sophomore Shelby Humphries broke down the left side, cut toward goal and unleashed a strong low liner.  While Karrick was again able to make the save, Freshman Charlie Socia finished the rebound for the 1-0 halftime lead.  Central opened the second half with the same pressure.  In the 43rd minute, a Socia one-touch volley on a feed from Jordan Wolf extended the Central lead to 2-0.  Central continued to pressure the Northern goal for that all important third goal, but momentum would soon swing.  Huskie Sophomore Natalie McClish cut the lead to one in the 52nd minute.  The goal appeared to put new life in the Huskies and they quickly capitalized as Sophomore Anna Stinson tied the score at 2-2 with an outstanding shot from what appeared to be somewhere in Vicksburg.  Central continued to attack the Northern goal, but Karrick continued to deny.  The final goal came with about four minutes left in the game as Northern cleared the ball out of their box to start a quick counter-attack.  The quick transition resulted in Freshman Sam Kay running to outrace the charging Central keeper to the ball and slide in the winner from twenty yards out.  The SMAC Tournament Championship stays in Portage, but heads North to Milham.  The final score was 3-2 Portage Northern with Portage Central placing 11 shots on goal to the Huskies 5.  Congratulations to Northern and best of luck in Districts to both teams.
